Leadership - Negotiation - Persuasion, Ages 11-14

Step into the world of leadership and learn the art of negotiation and persuasion in this interactive and hands-on course. Drawing inspiration from influential books like Getting to Yes and How to Win Friends and Influence People, this class equips students with practical tools to build relationships, resolve conflicts, and achieve their goals. Through engaging activities, participants will develop skills in leadership, effective communication, and strategic negotiation, preparing them to excel in school, teams, and beyond.

What We’ll Explore:

  • Key Concepts in Negotiation: Learn essential negotiation terms like BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement), positions vs. interests, and creating win-win solutions.
  • Persuasion Techniques: Understand how to build trust, listen actively, and craft compelling arguments to influence others.
  • Leadership Skills: Explore how to inspire and motivate teams, set goals, and make confident decisions.
  • Building Relationships: Develop empathy and the ability to connect with others by applying principles from How to Win Friends and Influence People.

Hands-On Activities:

  1. Mock Negotiations:
    • Role-play scenarios such as dividing team resources, negotiating allowances, or resolving classroom disputes.
    • Practice identifying BATNAs and finding creative solutions to meet everyone’s interests.
  2. “Yes Ladder” Game:
    • Learn persuasive techniques by guiding peers to agree to a series of small, reasonable requests leading to a final outcome.
  3. Persuasion Pitches:
    • Create and deliver a persuasive argument, such as convincing a “board” to approve a new idea or initiative.
    • Receive constructive feedback to refine communication skills.
  4. Conflict Resolution Role-Plays:
    • Act out real-world scenarios (e.g., resolving disagreements among friends or within a team) and apply principles from Getting to Yes to reach a fair agreement.
  5. Team-Building Challenges:
    • Work in groups to complete tasks like building a structure or solving a puzzle, with rotating leadership to explore different leadership styles.
  6. Empathy Exercise:
    • Practice Dale Carnegie’s principle of “seeing things from the other person’s perspective” by interviewing a partner and presenting their point of view in a negotiation.
  7. Decision-Making Workshops:
    • Solve hypothetical challenges using critical thinking and negotiation techniques, such as allocating limited resources in a group project.
  8. BATNA Strategy Session:
    • Break into groups to analyze different negotiation scenarios, brainstorm BATNAs, and present strategies to secure the best possible outcome.
