Myth-Busting Science, Ages 9-11

Kitchen-Chemistry

Is everything kids see online, on TV, or hear from friends actually true? In Myth-Busting Science, young scientists investigate popular myths and surprising claims using hands-on experiments, teamwork, and real scientific thinking. Each day, students make predictions, test ideas, and uncover what’s really going on—through launching balloon rockets, making slime, testing floating and sinking, and even designing their own experiments. This class is fast-paced, interactive, and packed with “aha!” moments that make science exciting, memorable, and fun.

Day 1: Your Brain vs. Reality

Theme: Can you trust your senses?

Myths We Explore

  • “Your eyes always tell the truth.”

  • “Taste only comes from your tongue.”

  • “Your brain reacts instantly.”

Big Takeaway: Seeing (or tasting) isn’t always believing—evidence matters.

Day 2: Physics Myths & Motion

Theme: Do objects really behave the way we expect?

Myths We Explore

  • “Heavier objects fall faster than lighter ones.”

  • “More force always means more speed.”

  • “Friction works the same on every surface.”

Big Takeaway: Motion follows rules—and experiments reveal them.

Day 3: Chemistry Isn’t Magic

Theme: What really happens when things mix?

Myths We Explore

  • “All chemical reactions are dangerous.”

  • “Mixing substances always causes explosions.”

  • “Slime is just goo, not science.”

Big Takeaway: Chemistry is about change—and it can be safe, predictable, and fun.

Day 4: Earth & Water Myths

Theme: Does nature work the way we think it does?

Myths We Explore

  • “Heavy things sink and light things float.”

  • “Water always flows straight downhill.”

  • “Clouds are heavy drops of water.”

Big Takeaway: Earth science explains the world around us—when we test it.

Day 5: Student Myth-Busters Lab

Theme: Can you bust a myth?

Myths Students May Choose

  • “Bigger objects are always stronger.”

  • “Magnets stick to all metals.”

  • “More force always means more speed.”

  • “Hot water always freezes faster than cold.”

Big Takeaway: Anyone can be a scientist—and science starts with curiosity.
